Cheerleader Syndrome

I saw some cheerleaders doing their cheerleading thing. And among them were a couple of cripples in wheelchairs. And these cripples were dressed up in their official cheerleader outfits, just like the verts (which is what I call people who walk because it’s short for vertical). Seeing all this bummed me out more than seeing cheerleaders doing their cheerleader thing usually bums me out. I’m sorry, but I have a hard time trusting people who are so deeply infected with cheerleader syndrome, which means that whenever they are in public, they must always be upbeat and enthused about everything around. They dare not ever let themselves be seen being even the tiniest bit skeptical about anything or they might get kicked off of the cheerleading squad and thus wind up dead of an overdose in a gutter somewhere. It's like this guy who works as a doorman at the hotel down the street from where I live. He’s always so bubbly all the time and on his nametag it says Showtime. So that’s what everyone calls him. And one day as I passed, he was standing outside of the hotel all alone. There were no guests around that he had to entertain. So I stopped and said to him that Showtime must be a hard name to live up to. And he quickly replied, “How about it, eh? What if I don’t feel happy some time?” That’s probably why seeing those crippled cheerleaders bummed me out so much. It’s like the way that black Republicans or female Republicans or gay Republicans bum me out more than regular old white, straight, male, Christian, vert Republicans do. I guess I‘m doubly disappointed when people who aren’t regular old Republicans turn in that direction because I think that they of all people ought to know how much playing that game hurts others. So it goes for crippled cheerleaders. Many of their fellow cripples are heavily oppressed by the false expectations of cheerleader syndrome. Some cripples are expected to be upbeat all the time, especially people who have Down Syndrome. Those poor mopes have to be happy and inspirational all the time if they want to get anywhere. That’s how they prove themselves worthy. If they’re ever grumpy about anything, they run the risk of being perceived as just another one of those bitter cripples and nobody likes those kinds of cripples.
